my own little things

daily essentials

A friend asked me to blog about my top five daily essentials. So here they are...

1. Moleskine: I know it's probably "old fashioned" to not put all your important dates and times into your phone these days, but I just need more then my iPhone can give me in terms of a calendar. It's not visually pleasing enough for me. This stays in my purse at all times. I use it every single day.

2. Bangles: The quick and simple addition for all outfits (except work-not allowed). I feel naked without the sound they make.

3. Ciggies: My disgusting vice...my horrible addiction...my saving grace...my stress reliever.

4. NARS lipstick in flamenco: I never thought I would be a red lipstick girl, but I'm hooked on the look and the way it makes me feel. The perfect quick fix for my plain jane days and a lovely addition for hitting the streets.

5. Eyeglasses: Can't drive/read/watch TV without them, which is why they remain a permanent fixture on my face. I've been trying to make a honest attempt to not wear them quite so much...I don't want to be a four eyes all the time. But I'm a fan of this classy simple old style look. I'll keep these frames for years to come.

6. My Pills: Do I need to explain? If so...to keep me from getting sick or having an anxiety attack. It depends on the day, and the bottle.

canine groomers

after holding out as long as i possibly could, i was forced to take charles to the groomer yesterday. i know i said long hair don't care, but i just don't think he could have made it any longer. i wasn't exactly doing the best job of brushing him every day. surprise surprise. but this time he didn't go to his usual groomer. we tried a new place out. a friend had been suggesting a place in shoreline that i should try, which sounded much better considering i was driving all the way to lynnwood to take him to pet parlor. now seriously, who lives in the city and takes their dog up north for grooming? honestly, i don't want to take him to the dog lounge. you have to book in advance and getting in and out of there gives me anxiety. in addition to that, he is known as young chuck money there, which i actually have to say if i want to make an appt, and his last several cuts there consisted of giving him a fu manchu, a mohawk and a lions mane. i'm not going back.

so i took him to canine groomers. meet my new groomers.

this place uses all organic products, hand dries your pooch (instead of putting a huge blowing fan on him while he sits in a kennel). you can also come in weekly for a brushing, clipping or clean up free of charge. this place is awesome. they managed to shave my shih tzu and still make him look adorable. kudos.

my valentine

I wanted to take Jim to Korean BBQ last night, since he'd never had it. I know what you're thinking... What the hell does he eat? I'll tell you! His diet mostly consists of party pizzas, wheat thins, 5 hour energy, sugary snacks and anything else that's fast or frozen or can sit on the shelf at the grocery store for months at a time. This is the opposite of my diet, although I am jealous of a person that can eat like that.
I was so excited for this. I hadn't had Korean in over a month and was seriously craving it. I knew he would like the meat, but I was a little concerned about the sides. And I was right. I made him try every single one. He didn't really love them. But he did love the meat/rice/soybean/lettuce wrap part of it. So I guess that's good enough. I practically had all the sides to myself and I'm not complaining about that. Could you really ask for a better Korean BBQ dinner date? I don't think so.  And I'm really proud of him for using chopsticks to eat everything! Good job!
After dinner we went back to my place and I made my first blackberry cobbler. Usually my family prize peach cobbler recipe is my deal but I must say I really loved this recipe and it created the perfect breading. I'm anxious to substitute the blackberries for peaches next time and see if I like this recipe more.

Not a bad valentines day.

thanks mom

I've been so busy I haven't had much time to blog. So let me catch you up.

LAST WEEKS DINNER NIGHT...was cooked by yours truly. I made a special dish. Everyone has favorites from growing up, so I decided to take a stab at making my moms roasted chicken with potatoes, broccoli and gravy...a true british style dish.
Those of you who really know me know that I love to eat meat, but handling raw meat is my least favorite part of cooking, and this was my FIRST time cooking an entire chicken.
But it was worth it. It was perfect. It tasted just like my mom used to make it. I couldn't have been more pleased with the outcome. I'll be cooking this dish until the day I die.
I even let my little guy Charles enjoy it too.

Our weekly dinner parties are without a doubt THE highlight of my week. Nothing could possibly beat home cooked meals and wine with your besties.

Jenna: I'm glad you could join.
